FIVE FOR THE LIGHTWEIGHTS

If you or your S.O. like a good scare but aren’t too into the whole…y’know…dismembering thing, these are great…

Edward Scissorhands (1990)

Are you rather more rom-com than slasher? How about the classic tale of boy meets girl, girl falls for boy, boy has scissor blades for hands…y’know that one?

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “I am not complete…”

Zombieland (2009)

The sign of a great movie is how often you can see it again and again while still enjoying it every time. This zombie apocolypse horror comedy about a shy, clown-phobic student surviving with the help of a group of equally kooky characters is just that. If you haven’t seen it, you’re in for a serious treat. If you have, hell you’ll still enjoy it.

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “Rule #1…Cardio”

*EDITORS NOTE: A quick update on this one as it is now available on Hulu Live TV and not regular Hulu.

The Craft (1996)

Embrace the 90s with this campy thriller that answers the question What happens if unpopular high school girls discovered real magic? Surely they’d use it for good, right? Um…not even close.

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “Oh, relax it’s only magic…”

Beetlejuice (1988)

Wait, two Tim Burton movies in one list?? When it comes to quirky-creepy scenarios with unforgettable characters, the man is a master. Also how could anyone forget all those stripes…

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “It’s….SHOWTIME!!”

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

The longest running movie in theatrical release, ever. Campy meets vampy meets musical. Yes, you will have an entire army of earworm songs after watching this. You’re welcome.

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “Dammit, Janet!”

FIVE FOR WHEN YOU’RE ALL ABOUT THE CHASE SCENE

If your idea of the best horror flicks require one heck of a great chase scene (or two) these will get your blood pumping…

Prom Night (1980)

Seriously, is it any wonder why kids in the 80s were afraid of the Prom? This was Canada’s highest-earning horror film and sports a nearly 10 minute long chase scene that’s as entertaining to watch as those retro beats are to listen to.

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “It’s not who you go with, honey. It’s who takes you home.”

I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

Another first of a franchise, the original is a literal who’s who of Hollywood’s coolest actors of the 90s. It’s a smart, fast-paced slasher of a film and you simply must give Sarah Michelle Gellar major kudos for her chase scene.

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “Next time you leave a man for dead, make sure he’s REALLY dead!”

Halloween (1978)

John Carpenter was a horror film director legend in the 70s, but Halloween is still considered to be his biggest success. It also gave Jamie Lee Curtis the crown of “The Scream Queen”. The now infamous Michael Myers escapes a mental institution where’s been since he stabbed his older sister to death. He returns to his hometown and, as they say, the rest is history…

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “You can’t kill the boogeyman”

Children of the Corn (1984)

Stephen King’s terrifying short story gets expanded to a full film that includes so many of the elements that makes him a master of horror. A cross-country traveling couple become trapped in a remote town peopled by a cult of kids who killed all the adults in the town at the behest of “He who lives behind the corn rows”. Oh and if that wasn’t creepy enough, all the kids speak in this weird version of biblical-english. That will pull up whatever hairs weren’t already standing at attention on the back of your neck.

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “Malachai! Malachai!”

The Shining (1980)

Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece of psychological horror. We almost put this one down under our “For the Suspense Lover” list but the chase scenes in this movie are legendary.

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”

FIVE FOR THE SUSPENSE LOVERS

Like your scary movies with a slow burn of layered scenes that build to a horrific climax? Well then, BOO! Here are some classics right up your alley…

Psycho (1969)

The godfather of generations of filmmakers (horror and otherwise). See what all the fuss is about and appreciate how a black and white movie can manage to convince you of so much blood.

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “We all go a little mad sometimes…”

Paranormal Activity (2007)

It’s a tough call, this one, since really this movie owns its existence to another horror classic – The Blair Witch Project. Still we give this one a leg up on the list, because the suspense level that’s maintained throughout this film is agonizing.

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “Next time I’m staying at Mom’s”

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Hello, Clarice…need we say more? Okay, how about this – a young ambitious FBI agent must track down a serial killer that skins his victims alive. She does so with the help of another serial killer, the infamous Hannibal Lecter. This is every bit as much a crime thriller and perfect for the times when you’re craving an intellectual horror story.

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “It puts the lotion on it’s skin, or else it gets the hose again”

The Ring (2002)

Compared to other horror flicks, this movie has surprising little gore…and yet it is still utterly terrifying. Amazing visuals and plenty of suspense make this a super creepy watch. The plot was also fairly unique for the time, where basically watching a video tape means death to those who watch it.

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “Here we go, the world is spinning. When it stops, it’s just beginning. Sun comes up, we laugh and we cry. Sun goes down, we all die”

The Sixth Sense (1999)

M. Night’s big twist for this movie has been out of the bag for a while now, but even if you know the ending the movie will keep you intrigued. So many little moments become “ah-ha” ones the more times you watch it.

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “I see dead people”

FIVE IF YOU LIKE HORROR WITH A SIDE OF COMEDY

It’s like sweet and salt. A combination that on the surface shouldn’t work but once you’ve tasted it, you’re in love…

The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

If you’ve seen just about every horror film out there but not this one, man have we got a treat for you. This movie achieved cult status by being basically a blood-soaked love letter to just about every memorable horror movie out there.

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “Soviet Economic Structures’! Aftermath of the Co..’! No! We have a lake and a cake! No more learning!”

Shaun of the Dead (2004)

If you’re only familiar with Simon Pegg from the “Mission Impossible” and “Star Trek” franchises, you’re gonna love his dark side. Co-written by Edgar Wright (Pegg’s good friend and cohort in film and in life) this is definitely more on the funny scale than horror. Still, you’ve got the Zombie Apocalypse and all, so…there’s that

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “Take the car. Go to mum’s. Kill Phil, grab Liz, go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over. How’s that for a slice of fried gold?”

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992)

The movie, that led to the series, which build the network empire known as “The WB”. This horror-meets-dark-comedy-meets-teenage-angst trifecta about a preppy cheerleader who turns out to be the reincarnation of the ultimate Vampire killer (aka “The Slayer”) is still a fantastic watch. The cast is engaging and the comic timing is perfect.

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “Pike isn’t a name…it’s a fish”

Evil Dead II (1987)

When is a sequel better than the original? When even the camera gets in on the action and becomes possessed. Unlike the first Evil Dead which was a pure horror flick, the second movie takes things to a whole new level. With a major infusion of dark comedy added to the gore factor, you’ll find yourself laughing and screaming at the same time.

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “GROOVY…”

An American Werewolf in London (1981)

Two friends hiking in the middle of nowhere, at night…what could possibly go wrong? This movie has a fantastic plot but the real stars are the side characters who are brilliantly unnerving and wonderfully witty. Also this was the first film ever to win an Academy Award for Best Makeup.

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “Has it occurred to you that it might be unsettling to see you arise from the grave to visit me?”

FIVE FOR THE LOVERS OF GOOD AND GORE

Going for gore doesn’t mean you have to always give up on plot. Then again, we won’t judge…we’re too busy hiding under the covers…

Hellraiser (1987)

Fantastic supernatural horror by Clive Barker and the first in several sequels that, alas, were no where near to being as good as the first one. This one checks all the boxes with demon gods, extra-dimensional creatures who live to torture, a strong, smart heroine who learns to survive against impossible odds, and of course we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention THE most iconic inanimate object itself…The Lament Configuration.

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “The box. You opened it. We came. You solved the box, we came. Now you must come with us.”

Carrie (1976)

This classic from the late 70s is still ranking on just about everyone’s Halloween hit list. Think your Prom was scary? You haven’t met Carrie…

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “Don’t count your chickens…”

28 Days Later (2002)

So much of the first season of “The Walking Dead” owes its plot to this horror/sci-fi flick. While the virus in this movie doesn’t turn people into zombies, as far as we’re concerned, the rage-driven infected are far more terrifying!

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “It was the blood. It was something in the blood. By the time they tried to evacuate the cities it was already too late.”

Child’s Play (1988)

A murderer, mortally wounded while running from the police, uses black magic to put his soul into a doll…sure, that could happen. Okay, so you have to give it up for Tom Holland who co-wrote as well as directed the film. In addition to several sequels and a reboot it also led to an entire generation of kids throwing out their My Buddy dolls out of fear it would kill them. How’s that for serious horror staying power?

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “We’re friends ’til the end, remember?”

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

For the record, this movie (and its 7 sequels) doesn’t have the best reputation for having much in terms of stunning acting or deep plot. But if classic slasher gore is what you crave, this is your huckleberry. After its release in 1974 it was immediately banned in several countries. Numerous theaters across the US refused to show it due to complaints about its violence. Oh and for the record too, while the movie was marketed at the time as being based on true events, the plot is almost entirely fictional. Maybe you can repeat that to yourself while you’re curled up in a fetal position watching it.

Awesome Quotable Line From This Movie: “If I have any more fun today I don’t think I can take it!”
