Top 10 Jacket Trends to Fall For

From denim to Decker jackets, puffers to the iconic leather, these are coats you need as the leaves start to fall…

As we say adieu to our warm, sunny days, and hello to Autumn’s chillier season, donning a fresh piece of outerwear is the perfect cure for those nippy fall mornings.

Fall jackets need to strike that perfect transitional temperature balance, not too light, not too heavy. And of course, grabbing something that fits that sweet spot and looks great? That’s the real challenge. Or at least it would be, except our Editors have already done the hard work for you.

We’ve got the ten biggest jacket trends hitting the F23 season, along with our own hand-picked favorites.

#10 – THE OVERSHIRT

This thick button up, usually made of wool or twill, makes for a both a great piece to throw over your tee on moderate days, or on top of a hoodie + tee when the temps get chilly.

When it comes to overshirts, you cannot go wrong with the OG brand, Woolrich. This classic red and black buffalo check is made from thick Alaskan wool, with real duck down padding. This fellow is absolutely worth every penny and will serve you well for years to come.

Woolrich, Alaskan Wool Check Overshirt $395

This solid, khaki version by J. McLaughlin is made from brushed Italian twill and features an extra set of pockets ideal for stashing all your stuff.

J. McLaughin, Khaki Solid Duster Shirt Jacket $298

And finally, this corduroy overshirt by Backcountry gives plenty of insulation with its sherpa lining. This one is definitely the one to throw on for those really chilly days.

Backcountry, Corduroy High Pile Fleece Lined Shirt $129

#9 – THE BOMBER

Year after year, the bomber jacket is a mainstay for fall dressing. A true fashion chameleon, it easily dresses down or up, depending on what you pair it with.

Starting with this familiar silhouette from Joe’s Jeans that adds a fresh update in the form of lightweight quilting. The sage color makes for a great neutral to add to your wardrobe rotation.

Joe’s Jeans, Rory Quilted Bomber $228

The Stephan Schneider brand is synonymous with crafted longevity and top quality materials. The Nylon Jacket File we found on La Garconne, is proof of this. The 3D waffle textured lambswool collar, the padded quilted satin lining and the solid, textured nylon finish all come together to create a jacket that’s quiet, sophisticated, and above all, timeless.

Stephan Schneider at La Garconne, Nylon Jacket File $610

Finally, with its colorblocking and prominent logo crest, this corduroy bomber from Ralph Lauren is giving major 90s. The corduroy gives it a good medium weight, and we really like the addition of the throat latch up top, for those times you really want to keep the wind off your neck.

Polo Ralph Lauren, Corduroy Rib Windbreaker $398

#8 – THE LIGHTWEIGHT PUFFER

Lightweight puffer/quilted jackets are also a return favorite. As the name implies, they won’t weigh you down, but they will keep you warm when the temps dip. Perfect for windy and chill autumn days, they also make for a great midlayer once those heavy flakes start to fall.

Another *fun* meteorological favorite of fall? That’d be sleet. When the skies open up and decide to grace you with their icy + rain presence, this North Face jacket will be your very best friend.

The North Face, Summit Breithorn Hoodie $379.95

Looking for a puffer that’s less outdoorsy and more off-duty? This synthetic fill jacket by Karl Lagerfeld is styled in a moto jacket silhouette. The result is a sleek, urban look with all the cozy warmth you crave.

Karl Lagerfeld, KL Print Quilted Jacket $325

Finally, who doesn’t love a good retro pattern with a healthy side of eco-friendly? Made from responsibly sourced down fill, this lightweight puffer from outdoor brand Cotopaxi, is channeling big 70s après ski energy.

Cotopaxi, Fuego Down Jacket $270

#7 – THE VARSITY JACKET

It may look similar to the bomber, but the varsity jacket draws its origins from academian sports, not military. Most are composed of mixed materials, usually a wool torso and leather sleeve combination. And of course, plenty of opportunities for embellishments including patches and embroidery. And while it may have spent some time pushed to the back of the fashion closet, this season’s obsession with the collegiate look has these colorful jackets coming in strong.

Mix your varsity with some serious streetwear, courtesy of this dark beauty from Smoke Rise. Stark black and white gives this jacket a polished look.

Smoke Rise, Varsity Jacket $185

From Hong Kong’s heavyweight brand, izzue, comes this minimalist focused varsity jacket. The weight on this one is much lighter than your typical varsity, making it an excellent choice when you need something to finish your look, without making you sweat.

izzue, Slogan-Print Varsity Jacket $101

(on Sale NOW from $200)

Finally, we have Sporty & Rich’s thick wool, leather trim varsity. The forest green is a cool color option that’s unexpected without being loud about it. The white leather details and embroidery are tastefully done, creating a nice, balanced look that will look just as good with your jeans as they will with your cargos.

Sporty & Rich, Logo Embroidered Varsity Jacket $362

(on Sale NOW from $602)

#6 – THE CAR COAT

Want to instantly polish up your look? Swapping your short jacket for a nicely tailored car coat can pretty much do that just by putting it on. With its paired down, but well-crafted silhouette, the car coat (as the name implies) was originally designed to keep drivers and passengers warm in their automobiles (the mid-thigh cut was meant to ensure the coat wouldn’t get caught under you when seated). Since then, its transformed into a fantastic grab-and-go outer layer.

This dark navy, cashmere version from The Kooples, showcases the clean lines of this versatile coat.

The Kooples, Long Navy Cashmere Coat $895

This textured leather version from John Varvatos adds a little ruggedness to the overall look.

John Varvatos, Vincent Coat $2,298

Finally, if you’re looking for an option that’s lower in cost but still has great quality construction, this wool version from Cole Haan is currently on sale at Gilt for a real steal.

Cole Haan, Signature Wool-Blend Car Coat $169.99

(on Sale NOW from $350)

#5 – THE HIGH PILE FLEECE

It stands to reason that the higher the pile, the thicker the fleece. And when the weather gets nasty, you really want all that fluff.

One of Patagonia’s all-time best sellers, the Retro Pile fleece is everything you expect from this soft and cozy style of jacket. Did we mention that it’s also made from all recycled fleece? YW.

Patagonia, Retro Pile Jacket $149

The 2010s are coming back in a big way, and that includes quite a few OG brands getting a lot more love these days. True Religion is one, and if you’re looking to rep, this ultra-cozy fleece jacket with its lowkey logo isn’t a bad way to go.

True Religion, Faux Shearling Puff Jacket $139

Finally, from the new season line at adidas, comes their 23-24 original camo print. Described as an “mix of Flecktarn and Woodland pattern, with an urban jungle twist”. The roomy fit gives plenty of under layer options, and as a bonus, it’s reversible (one side thick pile with pattern, the other a more streamlined pile in mostly solid beige).

adidas, Graphics Camo Reversible Fleece Jacket $130

#4 – THE BIKER JACKET

Ever since Marlon Brando’s epic counterculture character sauntered his way onto the big screen in “The Wild Ones”, the biker jacket has been the epitome of all-things-cool. Whether you go full 60s classic with heavy zippers and wide lapel, or streamlined collarless racer version, putting one of these on guarantees a warm fit and plenty of drip.

This dark brown fellow from Wilson’s Leather has so much going for it. From the textured padding up top to the lightly aged treatment, this is an all-around great looking coat.

Wilson’s Leather, Tyler Painted Leather Moto Jacket $295

Prefer the racer version? This cool, dark gray version, made of faux leather, includes plenty of shoulder and arm visual interest and sports a tailored fit.

Guess, Faux Leather Biker Jacket $168

Finally though, if you have your heart set on the original, this biker jacket from Phillip Lim has all the look and feel of the iconic 50s style.

3.1 Phillip Lim, Moto Biker Jacket $1,895

#3 – THE CHORE JACKET

Exceedingly versatile, the humble chore jacket has returned again at the top of the list for must have autumn jackets. But really, it’s no surprise. You can wear it as a more interesting replacement to the standard sports coat, the large number of pockets makes it great for venturing forth hands free, and, as the name implies, the good ones are made to be durable and long-lasting (something our wallets can definitely appreciate).

This J. McLaughlin version follows the traditional blue of the original French chore coats (circa the late 1800s) but reenvisions it in comfy quilt, giving it a fresh take on the old world style.

J. McLaughlin, Sebby Quilted Jacket $348

If you prefer the American classic version of the chore jacket, look no further than Carhartt’s Firm Duck. The nigh-indestructible duck cotton outer layer will look great for decades while the blanket lining will keep you nice and toasty on those chilly days. This guy will mesh beautifully with your other utilitarian pieces, but trust us on this – it’ll look just as good with a turtleneck and wide wale cords.

Carhartt, Firm Duck Chore Coat $119.99

Finally, we have this custom-woven Italian wool version from Knickerbocker. This jacket is for those who crave a thick and dense feel to their outerwear, but still want some luxe element to it…which the herringbone pattern does perfectly.

Knickerbocker, Wool Chore Shirt S&P Herringbone $280

#2 – THE GILET

Okay, sure, this one isn’t *technically* a jacket. But if you’ve been following any of the outerwear trends this year, you know that the gilet (pronounced juh-let) is everywhere. Why so popular now? You could blame it on our layering obsession, or the fact that this sleeveless padded jacket is a natural fit for a variety of utilitarian and streetwear looks, or that its design of keeping your core warm while letting your arms breathe make it the ideal piece for transitional weather. Whatever the reason, the gilet is huge this season.

When warmth is what you seek, The North Face delivers. Their Aconcagua 3 has a 50/50 down + recycled polyester insulation which creates efficient core heat, while staying breathable and moisture wicking (which BTW makes it ideal as a midlayer piece).

The North Face, Aconcagua 3 Vest $159.95

Looking for something a little lighter weight? This diamond-quilted gilet from Line of Trade maintains plenty of fill for keeping warm, but with a slim footprint. Bonus, it’s treated with a water-repellent coating, making it a great choice for those “iffy” autumn days.

Line of Trade, Essex Quilted Vest $80

Finally, for the guy who wants the best of both worlds. This Cotopaxi hybrid vest provides an even distribution of warmth with 100% recycled synthetic insulation covering the upper core and a low pile fleece down below to keep things from getting too roasty.

Cotopaxi, Trico Hybrid Vest $145

#1 – THE TRENCH

At last, we come to our numero uno on our list. If there’s one coat every man should have in his arsenal, it should be a quality trench. This first-line-of-defense against autumnal gloom and doom item can instantly class up your hoodie and sneak combo, or reinforce your dominance of genteel style with dress pants and shoes.

There are some brands that are so synonymous with the product they invented, people use it interchangeably. Like Kleenex, or Jello…or in the case of raincoats – Mackintosh. This Scottish company has been making top quality rain gear for over 200 years now. So if you’re looking for a coat that won’t quit, this is your Huckleberry.

Mackintosh at La Garconne, Oban Parka $1,795

For the trench loving guy who prefers a shorter silhouette, this mid-length trench by Michael Kors will appeal to you.

Michael Kors, Mid-Length Trench Coat $540

Finally, we have this unabashedly bold version by Emporio Armani that answers the question “what’s a practical raincoat that Morpheus from The Matrix would like?”. Curious? Why not click on the red link down below and find out for yourself?

Emporio Armani, Notched Lapels Leather Trench Coat $1,918
