Ringing True – Best Engagement Rings by Personality

If you’re one of the almost 40% of guys who’ve decided to make your summer relationship that much more memorable, it’s time to get planning NOW.

Not sure what it means when your significant other says they like their jewelry vintage? Or that they like Halo (hint, they’re not referring to the game, friend). Trying to read into all this can that take you down a serious rabbit hole. So let’s try a different route. Let’s find out what they like based on their personal style.

As you will note, with a few exceptions, we have chosen to showcase engagement rings exclusively from Beverly Diamonds. This is because they are a well-established, family-owned business that specializes in true diamonds of excellent quality. Their stones are guaranteed conflict free, and are neither lab-created or man-made. They back all their styles and stones and offer them at quality prices.

Here we’ll go over some great examples (and options) that will help you better identify what your loved one will cherish forever.

TIMELESS CLASSIC

She may not have a bulging closet full of fashion, but the pieces she does have are high quality, well-made and look as good this year as they did the year before. Her buying habits tend to be critical ones, and using the word “super-trendy” will probably get a good eyeroll out of her. When she does find something she truly loves, she may buy several colors of the same style. She doesn’t like to spend big bucks on disposable fashion, but she has no issue whatsoever paying more for a crafted, quality product.

Does this sound familiar? If so, you have a Timeless Classic lady in your life. Finding a ring worthy of her means you need to consider a style that’s beautiful, well made and with a design that doesn’t identify with a particular time or trend. For this personality type, your best bet is to look for a Prong, Cathedral or Infinity setting.

Here are our three top setting picks that match a Timeless Classic…

PRONG

Prong settings are traditionally done in either 4 prong or 6 prong (also known as the Tiffany Setting). It is one of the oldest and most popular form of settings because of its ability to create maximum light return through the center stone. A great deal of its reputation as a “timeless” style can be traced direct back to 1886 when Charles Lewis Tiffany trademarked his 6 prong setting, and hundreds of happy Victorian women flashed their fingers to the world.

(*Pricing will vary based on your choice of stone size, color, clarity and your choice of metal)

CATHEDRAL

As the name implies, the center stone in a Cathedral setting is mounted with delicate arches that resemble those of a church cathedral. It can be set with prongs, in a bezel or even tension mounted. The effect of the arched designs make it ideal for a woman who loves a timeless look to her ring.

(*Pricing will vary based on your choice of stone size, color, clarity and your choice of metal)

INFINITY

When it comes to timeless, there is nothing equal to infinity. This setting is a variation of what is called the Split Shank design. The “shank” is essentially the band of the ring. In a split shank setting the band is made of two smaller bands that have been fused together to hold the center stone. The Infinity setting takes this design to another level by twisting the bands to create the symbol of infinity (which appears to look like a figure 8 on its side).

This setting is extremely flexible in that it looks beautiful by itself in a clean band or in a more ornate set up. For the classic look, this is a ideal example…

MINIMAL MODERN

She prefers her home designs in metal, glass or steel. She likes her wardrobe sleek and without a lot of embellishments. Crisp and clean, but never boring, she’s more interested in fabrics and materials with strong lines and natural colors. She is a lover of the modern.

Does this define the lady love in your life? If so, you have a Minimal Modern. Finding a ring worthy of her means you need to consider a style that’s sleek, visually interesting and unexpected. For this personality type, your best bet is to look for a Tension, Bezel or Halo setting.

Here are our three top setting picks that match a Minimal Modern…

TENSION

The Tension setting is named for the tension created by the metal band to hold the stone in place. The overall effect created makes it appear that the stone is ‘suspended in air’ which in many ways, it is. It is a very dramatic look and usually comes with an equally dramatic price tag. This is a fairly young setting type, and can be traced back to the 1960s, although the first actual tension rings did not commercially debut until 1979 by the German company Niessing. So truly, it is a very modern design. And while it does look rather precarious in its setting, so long as you purchase yours from a reputable dealer (as is our example) there is little chance of the stone becoming dislodged through normal wear.

(*Pricing will vary based on your choice of stone size, color, clarity and your choice of metal)

BEZEL

Bezel settings are created by framing the center stone with a metal rim that holds it in place. Full bezels are most common but there is also the partial bezel setting, which leaves two of the sides open. For women with an active lifestyle or profession, this setting is ideal as it generally will not catch on clothing or other objects. Despite this being one of the oldest ring settings (going back to ancient Egyptian times, actually) the clean lines make this an great choice for the modern woman.

HALO

An extremely popular design with the security of a prong setting and the added wow factor of several stones framing the center, the Halo setting matches nicely by itself or with other supporting stones on the band. When courting this setting for the Modern style, the most important factor in the look is to go with a sleek shape.

VINTAGE DECORATIVE

Character and charm define her. She has a love of the old and can tell you the difference between ‘antique’ and ‘vintage’. She has a critical eye and enjoys showing off the latest finds that she purchased after scouring through estate sales and/or antique boutiques.

If this historically defines the woman you love, you have a Vintage Decorative. Finding a ring worthy of her means you need to consider a style that’s full of intricate detail and uniqueness, just like her. For this personality type, your best bet is to look for a Cluster, Halo or Cathedral setting.

Here are our three top setting picks that match a Vintage Decorative…

CLUSTER

Cluster rings were a mainstay in the Victorian era, not just for engagement rings, but in just about all fine jewelry rings. The hallmark of the cluster setting started with a center stone that was then tightly wrapped with other slightly smaller stones, often in the form of something resembling an opened flower, like this stunning beauty…

As shown, priced at $1,280.20* with .50 CT center stone and .43 CT side stones with 14K White Gold Band

(*Pricing will vary based on your choice of stone size, color, clarity and your choice of metal)

HALO

As described above, the Halo setting has a center stone with several stones framing the center. What makes a splendid Vintage look to a Halo setting? Look for shapes that speak to an older time, with plenty of character in both the accent stones and the band itself.

Here’s a great choice that would look right at home in the Art Deco era…

Beverly Diamonds, Anise Cushion Diamond Halo Ring

As shown, priced at $1,187.00* with .50 CT center stone, .26 CT in accent stones and 14K White Gold Band

(*Pricing will vary based on your choice of stone size, color, clarity and your choice of metal)

PRONG

Another setting that, when designed appropriately, can span several types of styles. For the Vintage lover, you want to look for features such as decadent filigree (small pieces of precious metals soldered into decorative shapes) and milgrain (small metal beads). These were added to create ornate borders and designs in most rings of the Edwardian era. When combined with the decorative element of the prong setting, it becomes a perfect match for anyone who appreciates the latticework of beauty, like this…

Beverly Diamonds, Edelweiss Cushion Diamond Ring

As shown, priced at $1,230.87* with .50 CT center stone, .49 CT side stones with 14K White Gold Band

(*Pricing will vary based on your choice of stone size, color, clarity and your choice of metal)

FASHION FORWARD

This is a gal who unabashedly loves her bling. If it sparkles, glitters or just knows how to catch the light, she’s got her eye on it. She knows her brands. Her wardrobe is carefully crafted with couture and she’s practically on a first name basis with the boutique stores in her area.

You know her and you love her, so pull out the stops, because being worthy of this lady is to know how to shop for a showstopper. For this personality type, your best bet is to look for a Pavé, Channel or Split Shank setting.

Here are our three top setting picks that match a Fashion Forward…

PAVÉ

From the French word meaning ‘to pave’, this setting contains several small stones clustered together through the use of mini-prongs. When coupled with an excellently sized center stone, it drips extravagant. When coupled with 3 stones (as our choice below) the overall effect is straight up dazzling.

Beverly Diamonds, Thistle Princess Diamond Pave Ring

As shown, priced at $1,425.06* with .50 CT center stone, .40 CT side stones and 14K White Gold Band

(*Pricing will vary based on your choice of stone size, color, clarity and your choice of metal)

CHANNEL

Similar to the Pavé setting, the Channel setting adds several smaller stones to the bling factor of the ring band. Unlike pavé though, the channel setting only has one solid band. However, what it lacks in numbers it makes up for in size. Though smaller, when these stones come together they not only enhance the look of the band but can make the center stone look that much larger. If your lady’s motto is ‘bigger is better’ this is a choice for you…

Beverly Diamonds, Yarrow Emerald Cut Channel Ring

As shown, priced at $1,687.07* with .50 CT center stone, .70 CT side stones and 14K White Gold band

(*Pricing will vary based on your choice of stone size, color, clarity and your choice of metal)

SPLIT SHANK

We talked about the Infinity style being a variation of the Split Shank. The advantage of this setting for your Fashionista is it allows for the ring bands to take on twice the amount of side stones. And because they are not clustered like Pavé it allows each side stone its own real estate to shine.

As shown, priced at $1,687.57* with .50 CT center stone, .90 CT side stones and 14K White Gold band

(*Pricing will vary based on your choice of stone size, color, clarity and your choice of metal)

UNCONVENTIONAL

She’s always been a non-traditional woman. While others follow convention, she enjoys the road not taken. Her opinions are her own, and that flows into not just how she prefers to dress, but into her whole philosophy. Quite possibly the most enigmatic of all the personalities, she wants a ring that works in her lifestyle, not the other way around.

Sound like your lady love? There are definitely many avenues to go here, and we could spend an entire article just on all the various types of non-traditional rings out there. Here are just a few choices that can be an option for you both to consider.

FOR THE ABSTRACT ARTISAN

Sometimes you like the idea of a traditional ring – stone in a setting, precious metal, etc…but want something more raw. In these cases, going for a pure artesian ring gives her something absolutely unique. It’s not for everyone, but if this is how she leans, you may consider something like this…

Etsy, Dawn Vertrees Jewelry, Rose Gold Raw Diamond Ring

As shown, priced at $1,260.00* with .50 CT raw diamond and 14K Rose Gold

(*Pricing will vary based on your choice of stone size, color, clarity and your choice of metal)

FOR THE LOVER OF COLOR

Diamonds are the traditional stone for engagement rings, but that was not always the case. Prior to 1947 many engagement rings contained stones such as emerald, ruby, pearl, aquamarine…just about any sort of precious stone was considered acceptable. If you have a gal who you know feels the same way

As shown, priced at $5,800* with 1 CT Tanzanite, .15 CT side diamonds and 18K White Gold Band

(*Pricing will vary based on your choice of stone size, color, clarity and your choice of metal)

NOT A HEAVY METAL GIRL

Sometimes the lifestyle or the profession your lady leads simply doesn’t allow for her to wear metal jewelry, precious or no. Cross training, working in professions that interact with electrical currents, medical fields that require it, there are many reasons why some couples choose to go the non-traditional route and shun metal ring jewelry altogether. What was once a limited area has become a growing market with several companies creating high quality silicone rings. No, they do not have stones, and many have limited designs but if this is the lifestyle you and your love have chosen, our personal favorite brand (best quality, good customer service, lots of style options) is Enso…

In conclusion, the love of your life deserves the best. Just like love itself, there is no single “one size fits all”. So when looking for what will be the ongoing visible token of your relationship, don’t just go for a style just because it happens to be in or trendy. Think about what makes her happy, the things she likes, her attitude and then go from there…Good Luck!
